The vape directory (or vape product registry) is a system implemented by US states to track and regulate vaping products sold within their borders. These directories typically require manufacturers to submit detailed product information and comply with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorisation status before their products can be legally sold in the state.
Initially, tobacco directory laws only regulated traditional cigarettes and roll-your-own tobacco products. However, as the market evolved, some states gradually expanded these regulations to encompass smokeless tobacco, heated tobacco and vaping products. The flood of unauthorised e-cigarettes into the US market prompted states to develop specialist vape product registries.
This report analyses enacted law and proposed bills that require e-cigarettes to be included in the vapour directories before they can be distributed or sold in US states.
