12th January 2024: US - Illinois: Senate Bill (SB) 2662 has been introduced. The bill would restrict a manufacturer, distributor or retailer from advertising, marketing or promoting an e-cigarette in a manner that is likely to cause a parent, teacher or other adult to mistake the e-cigarette for a product that is not a tobacco product.
13th September 2023: US - General: Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois has sent a letter to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Robert Califf. In his letter, Durbin criticised the FDA’s failure to finish analysing its premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs) and raised questions about the agency’s compliance with federal tobacco law. “Since FDA missed the court’s deadline two years ago, I have sent eight letters raising key questions about FDA’s regulatory review process and enforcement actions,” the lawmaker wrote. “It is unclear what – if anything – will finally prompt FDA to get its act together and take more seriously the risk of the tobacco industry addicting a new generation of kids.”
14th August 2023: US - Illinois: Senate Bill 1561 has been approved by the governor. This bill amends the Smoke Free Illinois Act, including the use of alternative nicotine products and electronic cigarettes in the definition of "smoke" or "smoking" for purposes of this act.
31st July 2023: US - Illinois: House Bill 1540 has been signed into law by governor J.B. Pritzker, amending the Smoke-Free Illinois Act of 2008. The amendment now bans the use of e-cigarettes in all indoor public spaces where smoking is already prohibited. The new law also updates the act to include “electronic smoking devices” in its provisions.
24th July 2023: US - Illinois: As of 23rd July 2023, retailers are no longer allowed to distribute any flavoured liquid nicotine product – except for tobacco flavour – in Cook County, as stipulated in the amended Cook County Youth Tobacco Control Ordinance. Cook County is the most populated county in Illinois and the second most populated county in the US, with a population of over 5m.
2nd May 2023: US - Illinois: Cook County has introduced an ordinance to ban the sale of flavoured liquid nicotine products. With a population of over 5m, Cook County is the most populous county in Illinois and the second most populous in the US. It includes the City of Chicago, which banned the sale of flavoured vaping products three years ago, but allowed flavoured tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes, to remain on sale.
