15th February 2024: US - Maine: The Hallowell City Council voted to end the sale of flavoured nicotine products, including menthol, in the city. Hallowell, with a population of approximately 2,500, is now the seventh community in Maine to ban these products, joining Falmouth, Portland, South Portland, Brunswick, Bangor and Bar Harbor in passing similar flavour bans. There is also a bill due to be taken up in the Maine House for a statewide flavour ban that was introduced last year.
11th January 2024: US - Maine: Hallowell is yet another city in Maine seeking to ban the sale of flavoured vaping and other tobacco products, including menthol. The proposed ordinance has passed its second reading in the City Council and now goes to the third. If Hallowell does pass a ban, it will join several cities, including the most populated cities of Portland and South Portland, that already have a ban in place. Hallowell has a population of approximately 2,500.
14th December 2023: US - Maine: The Falmouth Town Council voted 5-2 to impose a flavour ban on the sale of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, that will become effective on 12th March 2024. Additionally, the council passed a resolution to codify its support of the ban: “The Falmouth Town Council believes that reduced access to flavoured tobacco products could potentially reduce youth resident initiation to tobacco products and thereby decrease youth tobacco and nicotine addiction and associated health risks.” Falmouth has a population of over 12,000 residents and it is the sixth Maine municipality to approve a flavoured tobacco ban.
27th July 2023: US - Maine: Bill LD 1215 has been passed by the Senate and now heads to the House. It would ban the sale and distribution of tobacco products and e-cigarettes with any flavour other than tobacco flavour – and any for which a public statement or claim suggested a non-tobacco taste or cooling sensation. It would also update the state definitions of “Electronic smoking device” and “Flavored tobacco product”.
21st April 2023: US - Maine: Bills LD 1174 and LD 1215 are scheduled for a public hearing on 25th April 2023. Both would ban the sale of all flavoured tobacco products, except for tobacco flavour. Electronic smoking devices would be included in the ban.
11th April 2023: US - Maine: Bill LD 1558 has been introduced in the state Legislature, aiming to ban the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies and stores containing pharmacies. The definition of “tobacco products” in the section that would be amended by this bill includes e-cigarettes.
22nd March 2023: US - Maine: Legislative Document (LD) 1215 and LD 1174 have been introduced. Both would ban the sale of all flavoured tobacco products, except for tobacco flavour. E-cigarettes would be included in the ban.
9th January 2023: Maine: A statewide flavour ban has been proposed in the legislative session in Maine, which would ban flavoured tobacco products including e-cigarettes if passed. In December, South Portland enacted a flavour ban, joining the Portland, Brunswick, and Bangor communities. The Maine State Legislature has already begun its session, but the bill has not yet been assigned to a committee, according to the media.
21st December 2022: US - Maine: Yesterday, 20th December, the South Portland City Council approved a ban on the sale of flavoured tobacco products including e-cigarettes and menthol-flavoured products. The ban will become effective on 1st April 2023, making South Portland the fourth community in Maine to ban flavoured tobacco.
7th December 2022: US - Maine: South Portland City Council is considering a ban on the sale of flavoured tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. Councillors voted 5-2 yesterday in favour of the ban, which will include menthol products, press reports. South Portland, which has a population of 27,000, could become the fourth Maine community to ban flavoured tobacco, a previous attempt having failed in 2019.
21st April 2022: US - Maine: The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has issued a public statement praising Brunswick Town Council after it passed an ordinance on Tuesday prohibiting the sale of flavoured tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 1st June. The pressure group is urging the state legislature to enact a state-wide flavour ban by passing bill LD 1550.
30th March 2022: US - Maine: There is still an ongoing dispute between proponents and opponents of Legislature bill LD 1550, which was introduced last year, local media reports. The bill would ban the sale and distribution of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, in any flavour other than tobacco.
