27th June 2024: Malta: The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has published its Policy Framework for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Disease for public consultation. It includes policy recommendations aimed at enacting restrictive measures for novel tobacco products, through increasing taxation on novel nicotine products and electronic non-nicotine delivery systems, and strengthening the current tobacco control legislation to fully align with the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC).
24th May 2024: Malta: The Ministry of Health has updated the list of notified e-cigarettes and refill containers.
20th February 2024: Malta: According to minister of health Jo Etienne Abela, the first "specific" tobacco control strategy is being developed. The strategy will include measures that aim to reduce the affordability and availability of tobacco products, minimise tobacco advertising and discourage the illicit trade of tobacco products, media reports.
27th November 2023: Malta: A group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and associations have welcomed the news that the government is considering stopping smoking for future generations (a recent public consultation on a Children’s Policy Framework) but have called for additional actions, media reports. They have also called on the government to stop the cultivation and smoking of cannabis in private residences (to protect children who live with parents who smoke or cultivate cannabis at home), as well as the sale of e-cigarettes from stationery shops (accessed by children).
24th November 2023: Malta: The Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights has issued a Children’s Policy Framework public consultation document proposing a discussion on a generational ban on cigarette sales, media reports. There are no other measures proposed regarding nicotine products.
9th October 2023: Malta: Amendments to the Manufacture, Presentation and Sale of Tobacco and Related Products Regulations were published in the Official Gazette last week. The amendments include additional requirements for the health warning that nicotine-containing vaping products must contain, and extend the rules on cross-border distance sales to nicotine-free e-cigarettes and e-liquids.
