Elections could affect European countries’ support for vaping, researchers say
Governments in Europe are the most likely to officially support reduced-risk nicotine products such as e-cigarettes, according to new research from Tamarind Intelligence.
But recent and forthcoming elections in several countries – including those in Finland and Spain, as well as for the European Parliament – may prove crucial in determining the future status of these products, the researchers predicted.
Later elections in Ireland and the Czech Republic could also be significant, they added.
“Our analysis of official attitudes toward e-cigarettes and other tobacco harm reduction products shows some clear global trends,” said Tamarind Intelligence editorial director Barnaby Page. “For example, European countries tend to have more favourable attitudes, while Asian countries tend to be much more polarised.
“However, the laws in this area can change very rapidly – sometimes because government itself changes, or at other times because issues such as underage vaping or the environmental impact of disposable vapes come into the spotlight.”
Worldwide, the Tamarind researchers expect regulation of products like e-cigarettes, heated tobacco and nicotine pouches to become stricter, especially in upper-middle-income and high-income countries.
Flavoured products are likely to be one of the issues receiving the most attention, with many countries proposing to ban them.
The new research is based on the Tamarind Intelligence Policy Radar, which tracks current regulation and the anticipated future situation in more than 50 countries.
