A study has warned about “significant exposure” of Generation Z teens to videos glamorising vaping on social media platform TikTok and called for “effective age restrictions” to avoid it.
Australian researchers from the University of Queensland found that nearly two-thirds of the 808 vaping videos on TikTok they analysed portrayed a “positive” use of e-cigarettes and were viewed more than 1.1bn times. Neutral depictions were 24% with 290m views, while videos that showed the vaping use in a negative tone were 13%, viewed in total 193m times.
