13th January 2025: US - Iowa: State authorities have agreed to temporarily postpone enforcement of House File (HF) 2677, which regulates the distribution and sale of vapour products in Iowa by creating a directory of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved vapour products. The state was scheduled to publish its vapour products directory on 2nd January 2025, with enforcement to begin on 3rd February. In December 2024, the e-cigarette industry group Iowans for Alternatives to Smoking and Tobacco (Ifast) filed a challenge to HF 2677. The state will continue preparing the approved products directory while the case is pending, but will not take any enforcement action until the court has ruled, local media reports. A hearing on the matter is now scheduled for 5th March.
20th December 2024: Iowa: The e-cigarette industry group Iowans for Alternatives to Smoking and Tobacco (Ifast) has filed a challenge to state law House File 2677, which establishes a state vapour products directory to ban the sale of products not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The plaintiffs argue this infringes on the FDA’s exclusive authority, noting that the FDA is not currently taking enforcement action against vape products with pending premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs). The association also said that by the time the rules take effect, president-elect Donald Trump will be in office, and his administration could change the FDA’s enforcement priorities.
9th May 2024: US - Iowa: House File (HF) 2677, which is awaiting the governor’s signature, would create a public directory where vapour products would have to be listed. HF 2677 has been met with some opposition by retailers in Iowa, as stated by a supporter of the bill, who emphasised that it would bring a positive outcome in order to stop the sale of “illegal Chinese vapes”.
