22nd August 2024: Iraq: Majid Shingali, head of the Health and Environment Committee of the Council of Representatives, told press that the Protection Against Tobacco Damage Bill is in its final stages after all discussions were completed and that meetings with stakeholders are currently being held to ensure that the law is comprehensive. The bill regulates electronic nicotine products under the tobacco framework for age restriction, advertising and public place usage. It also imposes notification and labelling requirements.
10th June 2024: Iraq: Abbas Jabar, director of the Smoking Control Division in the Ministry of Health, has warned against the alarming spread of e-cigarettes among teenagers and called for regulating e-cigs and restricting their sale and promotion, press reports. Iraq’s anti-smoking law sets restrictions on the consumption, sale and promotion of tobacco but does not directly mention vaping products.
8th February 2024: Iraq: The Nineveh health directorate of the Ministry of Health issued an order prohibiting the entry of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products onto any of its premises, adding that the civil defence unit official will be responsible for the enforcement of this order.
13th September 2023: Iraq: The Council of Representatives has held the first reading of the Protection Against Tobacco Damage Bill, which was presented by the Health and Environment Committee. It regulates electronic nicotine products under the tobacco framework for advertising and public place usage. It also imposes notification and labelling requirements.
14th August 2023: Iraq: Abbas Jabbar, director of the Tobacco Control Division at the Ministry of Health, has warned against the widespread use of e-cigarettes in society, especially among young people, and stressed the urgency of establishing a bylaw to set public usage restrictions for vaping products. Iraq’s anti-smoking law sets restrictions on the consumption of tobacco in public places but does not directly mention vaping products.
7th July 2023: Iraq: Abbas Jabbar, director of the Tobacco Control Division at the Ministry of Health, emphasised that e-cigarettes have been linked to premature deaths and highlighted that many e-cigarette users ultimately return to traditional cigarettes due to nicotine addiction, press reports. He added that tobacco companies rely on marketing techniques to mislead smokers into believing that they can quit combustible cigarettes by using e-cigarettes.
3rd May 2023: Iraq: The Erbil Governorate in Kurdistan yesterday issued a notice prohibiting the marketing and advertising of e-cigarettes and all tobacco products through the media, either written, visual, audio or social, press reports. Iraq’s anti-smoking law bans the advertising of tobacco, but does not directly mention the advertising of novel nicotine products.
20th January 2023: Iraq: The public prosecutor of the Duhok Governorate in Kurdistan banned the use, sale and circulation of e-cigarettes, press reports. As a consequence of the decision, Farhad Ismail, director of the Prevention Department at the Duhok Health Directorate, reported to the press that these products spread at an alarming rate among youth, and that the ban came after long discussions about their adverse effects in the region.
