15th November 2024: Singapore: On 13th November 2024, the Ministry of Health (MOH) released a parliamentary question and answer titled “Measures to Curb Vaping in Schools and Reduce Availability of E-Vaporisers”. The MOH said enforcement efforts have been stepped up at checkpoints, public spaces and major events. This includes enabling agencies like the Singapore Police Force to issue digital Notices of Composition instantly. The Health Sciences Authority also removed around 6,000 online listings of e-vaporisers in the first three quarters of 2024, which is double the amount removed in 2023. Noting that 15% of offenders are repeat violators, the MOH emphasised the need for sustained enforcement and stronger public education, particularly in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other agencies, to address vaping’s risks among youth.
23rd October 2024: Singapore: The Ministry of Health and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) reported a 52% rise in vape possession and usage cases, with 743 students referred by schools and 44 cases detected through enforcement operations near institutes of higher learning. These contributed to the fines imposed on 3,840 individuals between 1st July and 30th September 2024 for possessing or using vapes – up from 2,530 in the previous quarter. The authorities are increasing efforts to combat vaping, working with various agencies on community patrols, online monitoring and enforcement at checkpoints. Recent incidents include fines issued at major events and offences related to social media, press reports.
17th April 2024: Singapore: A Chinese vaping product manufacturer has been using social media influencers to promote its products in Singapore and other countries, according to The Straits Times newspaper. The manufacturer has not been named. The influencers are allegedly hired by third parties to promote the products, which do not comply with the country’s regulations. Singapore banned vaping in February 2018. During a debate on the issue, member of Parliament Yip Hon Weng of the ruling People’s Action Party suggested using public awareness campaigns to combat illegal marketing.
