Introduction: E-cigarettes in North America

With the largest vaping market in the world – the US – on its continent, North America is a very important one. In the US, many more companies than initially thought submitted premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs), with first approvals expected at the end of 2021, when proper enforcement will also begin. State and local restrictions are having a larger impact on the market than federal policy in the US, especially flavour restrictions and taxation of products.

Over in the border in Canada, advertising restrictions were increased at the federal level in August 2020, while flavour regulations changed in Ontario province and other provinces such as Nova Scotia have plans to do the same in 2021. Like most markets, Canada has felt the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the market decreasing in size and possibly continuing following further regulatory changes due in 2021.
