US vape store revenue and customer confidence rising

US vape store revenue and customer confidence rising, despite Covid and health scares

US vape stores’ typical revenue increased nearly 15% in 2021 compared to the previous year, according to new research from ECigIntelligence.

In the 539 stores covered in an ECigIntelligence survey, average sales grew to around $35,000 per month.*

That represented a substantial turnaround from 2020’s survey, when public concerns over EVALI (the acute lung disease erroneously linked with nicotine vaping) were given as a main reason for a sharp decline in sales.

“The negative impact of EVALI on customer confidence appears to have significantly declined”, the latest report from ECigIntelligence says.

And disruption from Covid-related measures such as lockdowns was likely offset by the closure of less competitive businesses, enlarging the customer base for those that remained.

The research also finds that vape stores are diversifying:

  • Cannabis products are sold in most vape stores.
  • Two thirds of vape stores are selling products made with synthetic nicotine, which is not derived from tobacco.
  • About a third are selling nicotine pouches as well as e-cigarettes.
  • The highest revenue growth was seen in disposable e-cigarette products.
  • Sales of pod-type e-cigarette products have dramatically diminished since the federal ban on flavoured pods.

“This latest instalment of our annual vape store survey portrays a sector surviving and diversifying despite the many recent challenges it has faced,” said Freddie Dawson, managing editor for news at ECigIntelligence. “Vape stores are increasingly supporting a wide range of alternatives to smoking.”
