Bangladesh budget proposes spike in taxes to get harm down and revenue up

The Bangladeshi government’s latest annual budget proposal lists a substantial rise in the taxation of nicotine products, including a certain category of cigarettes, e-cigarette devices, vapes and even cigarette paper.

In a speech in the Bangladeshi parliament earlier this month, finance minister A.H.M. Mustafa Kamal said that to reduce the consumption of tobacco products and increase revenue from this sector, the price and supplementary duty of specific packs of cigarettes will be raised.
